Coventry after dark…
Coventry is my home city. I know its roads, its buildings, its familiar corners and the places most people walk past without giving them a second thought. I’ve photographed it for years, but there’s something about the city after dark that keeps drawing me back. The streets change, the lights come on, the traffic builds and places I’ve known all my life start to look completely different.
When people think of Coventry, the Cathedral and Lady Godiva are usually the first things that come to mind. They’re an important part of the city, of course, but they’ve been photographed countless times. I wanted to look elsewhere. At the Ring Road that almost everyone here has a story about. At the old buildings still standing among the new ones. At the arches, hotels, underpasses and busy junctions that make up the Coventry I know.
A lot of these photographs were made on wet evenings, when the roads and pavements caught every colour around them. I’d find a spot, set up the camera and wait for the traffic to do its thing. Headlights and taillights became long ribbons of light, sometimes sweeping right across the frame. A familiar street could suddenly become a mass of blue, red and gold, while the buildings around it stayed perfectly still. That contrast is one of the things I love most about photographing the city at night.
There’s a mix of old and new in these eight images that feels very Coventry to me
The Elephant Building and the Frank Whittle Arches sit alongside newer developments, while the Telegraph Hotel brings another piece of the city’s past into a busy night-time scene. The Ring Road runs through the collection too, not as something to hide or work around, but as part of Coventry’s character. It might not be everyone’s idea of a beautiful landmark, but it’s ours.
Last Orders has already had a little life of its own, having been featured on the local paper’s social media pages. Seeing people respond to a photograph of somewhere so familiar was a lovely reminder that you don’t have to travel far to find something worth looking at. Sometimes it’s a place you’ve passed a hundred times, seen at the right moment.
This collection is personal because it’s my city. It isn’t intended to be a complete portrait of Coventry, and it certainly isn’t a tour of all its best-known sights. It’s eight moments when I stopped, looked at somewhere familiar and saw something I wanted to keep.
The Coventry I know, with the lights on and the city still moving.
Colour Rush captures the city transformed by artificial light, as vivid bands of pink, blue, green and gold spread across the underside of a concrete structure and reflect across the wet road below.
What might otherwise be an ordinary urban setting becomes a striking display of colour, with every surface contributing to the scene.

Elephant Parade captures a rush of movement through a city street, where sweeping blue and white light trails curve past a sharply defined modern building. Last Light captures the final vivid colours of the evening sky above a busy urban road. A narrow band of red and magenta stretches across the horizon, while long trails of white and red light follow the traffic below.
